Nexus 7 (2013) Car Dashboard [2]: Rooting and installing Timur ROM

The next logical step is to root the Nexus 7 (2013) and installing the Timur ROM, which is a specially crafted custom rom, provided by Timur, specifically for in-car installations.
Be aware, there are now 2 generations of Nexus 7: an older one, and a new one (released 2013).
This is for the new Nexus 7.

The Timur's ROM for Nexus 7 (2013) is not free (currently), you need to make a donation to the guy to get it.

My tablet is the cheaper 16 GB model, dubbed "FLO". This tutorial handles this flavor of Nexus 7. Currently it is fresh from the store, so it has the official stock rom, I have not flashed it previously.
Keep in mind that flashing non-official roms will void the warranty of your device and you can't hold me reliable for bricking your Nexus 7.
Before doing anything to your tablet, read the following links to get the idea what is to be done:

Unlocking the Nexus 7 (2013) Bootloader - xda-developers

Steps:
  1. Install the Android SDK and Google USB driver for Windows.
  2. Enable USB debugging on the Nexus 7.
    1. Unlock Developer Options by going to Settings > About Tablet and clicking on the build number seven times.
    2. Go to Settings > Developer Options and check USB debugging. Click OK on the warning.
  3. Connect the Nexus 7 via USB cable to the PC (use USB 1.1 or 2.0 ports to be on the safe side).
  4. Reboot the Nexus 7 into the bootloader.
    1. Open a command line / terminal on your PC and navigate to the folder where adb.exe and fastboot.exe reside.
    2. Enter
      Code:
      adb reboot bootloader
      and hit enter.
  5. Once the Nexus 7 boots to the bootloader, unlock it:
    1. At the command line / terminal enteron the PC
      Code:
      fastboot oem unlock
      and press enter.
    2. On the Nexus 7, use the volume up button to select 'Yes' on the 'Unlock bootloader?' screen.
    3. Press the power button to save your choice and verify on the next screen that you see 'LOCK STATE - UNLOCKED' at the bottom.
    4. Use your volume keys to select 'Start' and click the power button to factory reset and reboot.
The nexus should restart to normal. However all your settings and apps are gone, cause it is now in factory reset state. This is the end of step 1. Next is flashing a recovery image on your device, so that it can be used to flash the custom rom.
Steps:
  1. Choose which recovery image to use. There are 2 flavors, TWRP or CWM. I had problems with CWM, so I went with openrecovery-twrp-2.7.0.0-flo.img
  2. After you downloaded the image, put it in the folder with the adb.exe.
  3. To flash the image in the command prompt window type in the line below and press Enter.
    fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.7.0.0-flo.img
  4. If everything goes fine, TWRP recovery will be successfully flashed on your Nexus 7 2013 (Flo).
  5. You can boot into recovery by:
    1. Switch off your Nexus 7
    2. Hold Volume Up Key + Power Key and release the power key when you see the Google Logo but keep holding Volume Up Key until you see the TWRP recovery main menu.
    3. Choose to restart the tablet. The program should warn you that your device is not rooted and will suggest installing a program "SuperSu". Accept.
    4. After restart the program should download and install some stuff to root your tablet.
After all that, you should be able to install the Timur ROM, which you paid for.
Steps:
  1. Copy the rom image to /TWRP folder on your Nexus.
  2. Restart in recovery mode (Hold Volume Up Key + Power Key...)
  3. Choose "Install" and select the zip with the image.
  4. After that restart the tablet. If there are more images, install them the same way.

  1. Its not that its not free its that he is illegally making money off of it. Because of this forums are starting to lock threads.

Timur is great and make great products but if you try to cheat the low you lose.

  2. Don't chat shit anonymous. He's not doing anything illegal. The threads are getting shut down on XDA because their site rules don't allow you to sell things on the site.
If you had read your own link you would have realised that

  4. Instead of helping the community and actually accepting donations. Instead of selling a "membership" to his site, to be able to download it. We all have different opinions, but I think it is wrong.

the license agreement requires you provide the source
"If you commercially distribute binaries not accompanied with source code, the GPL says you must provide a written offer to distribute the source code later. "

he also states "not for commercial use" on the page, the license agreement allows commercial use.

  6. comment as not for commercial use has nothing to do with commercially distribute or not.

    check these 2.

Section 2 says that modified versions you distribute must be licensed to all third parties under the GPL. “All third parties” means absolutely everyone—but this does not require you to do anything physically for them. It only means they have a license from you, under the GPL, for your version.

But if you release the modified version to the public in some way, the GPL requires you to make the modified source code available to the program's users, under the GPL.
